Cochrane, the global leader in evidence-based healthcare, has introduced its new scientific strategy for the years 2025 to 2030. The strategy aims to improve health outcomes worldwide by providing reliable, high-quality evidence where it is needed most.
New Commitments
Building on more than thirty years of experience in systematic health research reviews, Cochrane’s new strategy also embraces several essential commitments:
- Innovate in methods
- Promote health equity
- Collaborate and involve
- Champion research integrity
New Research Priorities
Today’s world faces unprecedented health crises — from persistent infectious diseases and the effects of climate change to growing inequalities in access to healthcare. Cochrane has launched a plan to respond to these global challenges. The key research priorities include:
- Maternal, newborn, and child health
- Multiple chronic conditions
- Infectious diseases and pandemics
- Climate change and sustainability
These focus areas were selected through a comprehensive analysis of global health data, and in consultation with experts and patient communities.
Concrete Goals and Impact
In the field of maternal and child health, Cochrane aims to improve outcomes for mothers and children globally and reduce disparities in access to quality care. The organisation also supports interventions to prevent premature birth and complications after childbirth.
For chronic conditions, the focus is on improving care systems that can better support patients with multiple conditions, and on preventing further complications through evidence-informed healthcare.
In the area of infectious diseases, Cochrane will strengthen research on prevention, diagnostics, and global pandemic preparedness, ensuring faster and more effective responses to emerging threats.
Regarding climate change, the organisation will explore more sustainable healthcare systems, protect vulnerable populations, and identify ways to better manage the health impacts of a changing environment.
A Vision for the Future
This strategy is not just a framework — it’s an invitation to collaborate. Cochrane invites researchers, funders, healthcare institutions, and patient organisations to join a global effort.
“Together, we can harness the power of evidence to overcome today’s most urgent health challenges and build a healthier, more equitable world for all,” says Karla Soares-Weiser, Cochrane’s Editor in Chief.
